Q. What is “Check for this item at the UTEP Library?”

Answer

If you are looking for a PDF Full Text or Linked Full Text option when going through search results in a database, but only see Check for this item at the UTEP Library, it means that the full text of that article doesn't necessarily "live" in the database you're searching in, but that it might be available in one of the UTEP Library's other ~395 databases. All you have to do to check is click that link!

Here are a few things that might happen after you click Check for this item at the UTEP Library:

A. The full text is available!

  • if the new tab that opens has a link after the heading Full Text Sources, click that link to go to the page where the full text of the article can be downloaded (see highlighted, below)

B. The full text might be available-- find the journal it's published in at the Library to check.

  • if the new tab that opens has a link that says Nugget, that means you need to check to see if the library subscribes to this journal-- if we do, choose a link that covers the year that the article you need was published in, then go to the journal's page and search for the article by its title there. (see steps 1 and 2, below)

C. We subscribe to the journal this article is published in, but our subscription doesn't cover the date this article was published.

  • if the new tab that opens has a link that says Nugget, that means you need to check to see if the library subscribes to this journal-- if we do, choose a link that covers the year that the article you need was published in; if none of the links include the year the article was published in, we don't have access. (see steps 1 and 2, below)

2.

D. We don't have subscription access to this article

  • if the new tab that opens has a link that says Nugget, and you follow it to check to see if the library subscribes to the journal, but the journal isn't in the results (pictured below) it means we don't subscribe to the journal and do not have access to the article
